This post is part of an ongoing series, Meet the critters, that introduces our cast of animalian characters here at the farm.
Ruby came to us in late February 2021, the outcast from a puppy-mill whose mom had died from worms, malnutrition, and neglect. So we bottle raised her and ended up adopting her.
Ruby has one speed, which is full-on, and one volume setting, which is LOUD! Adopters beware, beagles don’t have an inside voice.
Surprise, surprise I took a liking towards her.
And she grew up and held her own with the other girls.
And here she is exactly one year after being bottle fed back to life, snoozing away in the windowsill of my office.
Like many of our animals she has names and nicknames. Her full name is Ruby Jean Ramsey Kearns, but we call her Roo, Roo-Bot, RoobyTooby, Roobot-Ta-Doo-Bot, RoobyScooby, and of course ROOOOOOO, which is her number one sound she makes.
I never would have thought I would be into beagles. But they are really great dogs. Super smart, very attentive, good learners, very ALERT. Beagles are definitely ALERT. Very loyal, very loving, and sweet. Def recommend if high volume outbursts are not an issue for your situation. Def recommend if you have some rabbits ‘round need chasin’.
Another great reason to adopt a beagle - because of their loyal and amenable nature they are a go-to breed used in cruel research projects. I greatly admire the journalism of Leighton Woodhouse, and I read almost all of his stuff. I did not read his reporting on the use of beagles in research projects funded by, for example, Dr. Anthony Fauci, as described in the article linked here. I trust Leighton to do good reporting, but I cannot vouch for it in this case because I didn’t read it. Because I don’t want to read it. After raising and loving a beagle I cannot bear to read about their torture in “scientific” experiments. A consequence of which sanctuary and rescue operations have been established in various locales.
So let’s not end on a downer. Our Roo-bot has the run of the house. (And needs a bath!)
Bless you for keeping her ❤️
